Buller Day Our Gig Racing Day
update 28 July 2011:
Dear Clubs,
Just to confirm arrangements for Buller Day on the
6th.
At the end of this email is the list of clubs booked
to come. Please do let me know as soon as possible
if you can’t make it for any reason as we have a waiting
list of clubs who are eager to come along. Please
can clubs borrowing our gigs (other than Scilly) bring
oars, pins and seats.
As you’ll be aware if you’ve been before, the road
into the cove is tight, so we need to bring gigs down
one at a time to unload, and later load. There’s no
way round this taking several hours so please be patient.
We’d be grateful if five clubs could volunteer to
arrive between 9 and 10, so we can get a good start
in the process. Are the clubs marked with a + prepared
to do this? Local clubs are welcome to drop their
gigs to Cadgwith public carpark the day before instead.
Gigs to follow signs to Cadgwith. Please can rowers
follow signs to Ruan Minor. Car parking will be laid
on in a field reached by driving through Ruan Minor,
on the left just before the road drops into Cadgwith.
Anyone wanting to camp over is welcome to do so, on
the grass below the public carpark. We’ll even lay
on a portaloo! We’re warming up on Friday night, with
a bar, pasties and singing on the slip courtesy of
Cadgwith singers – please do join us. On Saturday
a BBQ will be running all day, and we’ll have cakes
and sandwiches in the gig shed. From 8pm on Saturday
night, we’ll be hosting our customary Buller Night
party with live band and bar til 1am.
If we do have to cancel, I’ll do this by email on
Friday night by 10pm.
The coxes meeting will be at noon with racing
commencing at 12:30pm. The order of racing
will be:
Ladies A
Mens A
Under 16s
Ladies B
Mens B
Under 14s
Vets

Looking forward to a good day’s racing

Cadgwith Gig Club Buller Day 2011
On behalf of Cadgwith Gig Club I would like to invite
you to
Buller Day on Saturday 6th August.
We would request that boats start arriving from 9:30am as, due to the narrow roads, they will need to be unloaded one at a time. All gigs to follow the road signs to Cadgwith please, where you will be met at the top of the hill by Cadgwith members who will organize transport down to the cove. All rowers please follow the signs to Ruan Minor, where parking will be available in fields at the top of the hill, a 5min walk from the cove.
The coxes meeting will be at noon with racing commencing at 12:30pm. The order of racing will be:
Ladies A
Mens A
Under 16s
Ladies B
Mens B
Under 14s
Vets
Mixed
We will be running a BBQ throughout the day, and selling cakes and refreshments from the gig shed. In the evening, a party with licensed bar will be held in the gig shed to round off what we hope will have been an enjoyable day’s racing. We also intend to run a bar on the friday night, and can arrange camping if you would like to stay over. Due to limited space we will unfortunately have to restrict the number of gigs, so please therefore get back to me if you would like to attend.
Yours sincerely, Rachel Holder, Secretary

Cadgwith Buller Day 31st July 2010
Report
by Sue, 4 July 2010
Cadgwith once again hosted ‘Buller Day’ this year, a
race event in honour of the late
Richard ‘Buller’ Arthur who helped rekindle interest in
gigs, and after whom our first
gig was named in 1986.
16 visiting clubs brought gigs from across Cornwall,
making a colourful spectacle
in the cove, against a back drop of thatched cottages
and fishing boats. We also
welcomed ladies crews from the Isles of Scilly and Salcombe
who borrowed
Cadgwith boats.

Conditions and weather were fair, setting us up for a
good day’s racing. Mounts
Bay took the Vets race, with Newquay the first all Ladies
crew across the line in 9th
borrowing Padstow’s new gig Brabyn. Cadgwith juniors put
in strong performances,
to retain both U16 and U14 trophies. Falmouth took the
Mens A title, followed by
Mts Bay and Coverack. Falmouth put a couple of crews out
in the Mens B, taking
1st and 2nd, with a fishermen’s crew in 6th. Newquay ladies
were in winning form,
taking the Ladies A from Falmouth. Positions were reversed
for the B race, with
Falmouth crossing the line first (but they had declared
their crew as mainly A
rowers). The visiting Isles of Scilly crew won the Mixed
title. Thanks to all who
made it such a great day’s rowing, and everyone who drank
our bar dry afterwards!

Special
mention for the emergency services, namely air and land
ambulances, RNLI
and coastguard, for their rapid response to an accident
during the afternoon in which a
Coverack junior slipped down the cliff above the cove,
and those people on the beach
who cared for him until he was airlifted to Treliske.
We’re pleased to hear he escaped
with only cuts and bruises, and has made a full recovery.
(report by Sue, photos Greg)
PLEASE leave gigs in car park until instructed. Please
contact us before bringing gigs to the village, so we
can help (more below).
This year we hope to have a great day. Hopefully the sun will shine, the sea calm, but even it not, we will hope to have great racing! A BBQ all day for those shore side, food and beer as well. The prize giving will be in the Gig shed where you will be welcome to stay for an evening of drinking and food, and hopefully some good entertainment.
Photos of past BULLER DAY
A special thank you to certain people from last year...
Slim and Sarah Legge on the start boat, I'm sure all the Ladies A crews won't forget Sarah telling everyone that she will NOT be starting the race until Newquay gets back!
Gwen Jane for her commentry all day, excluding the vets race when she raced and was part of the 1st full ladies vets crew over the line!
All the umpires which come from other clubs to help us out - there are too many of you to name personally, but you know who you all are!
All club members who helped out during the day with car parking, organising the boats, selling food and drink, bar and BBQ cooking (a special mention to Josh and Alex who spent 4 hours non stop on the BBQ).
Hopefully everyone enjoyed the day and thank you to everyone who turned up, rowed and supported us.
It would be appreciated if all gigs could follow the signs to Cadgwith and avoid the route through Ruan Minor (head towards the Lizard) Once at the top of the hill Cadgwith members will be on hand to organise the transportation of the gigs down the hill. Please wait until told to head into the cove as, most of you are aware, it will cause problems.
It would be appreciated if all rowers could follow the
signs to Ruan Minor where we have managed to organise
a field for parking. The field will be signposted and
is situated at the top of the hill going into Cadgwith,
a 5min walk to the Cove.
Camping info:
Ron and Jo Lyne (Lizard Village) have contacted the Cadgwith
Gig Club regarding their event this year. A lot of crews
camped at their campsite in Lizard village last year and
the rowers appreciated their taxi run to Cadgwith. They
would like to inform those rowers that spaces are getting
booked up very fast so if you intend to return this year
please let them know as soon as possible. Their phone
number is 01326 290596
