Buller Day, Reports from previous years
Cadgwith Pilot Gig Club race with our four gigs. "Buller", "Socoa", "Rose of Cadgwith" and "Tamarisk”
Buller Day Our Gig Racing Day
20011 Buller Day, 6th August 2009.
All went well at Buller Day, Cadgwith Gig Club’s annual
race event. The day, and our first gig Buller, built in
1986, are both named in honour of the late Richard ‘Buller’
Arthur who was instrumental in rekindling interest in
gigs in the cove, and Cornwall more widely.
We
were fortunate in having a sunny day and calm seas, which
made for a great afternoon’s racing, against the picturesque
back drop of the cove, decked out in flags and bunting.
There were 17 visiting gigs, and our own gigs Tamarisk,
Rose, Socoa and Buller in action, making for some tight
competition particularly turning the marks on the kite
course. Clubs travelled all the way from Bristol and Salcombe,
as well as from across Cornwall to join us, at what is
always a popular event on the circuit. Falmouth, reigning
world champions, were in fine form, taking the Ladies
A and B, Mens A and B, and Vets races in their new boat
Black Rock. Their ladies even put several of the mens
crews to shame, as they went round the course for a second
time in the Mens B race, finishing with much of the fleet
behind them. Luckily for the men, the ladies placing had
to be disallowed!
Cadgwith Juniors were out in force with 2 under 16s, and
3 under 14 crews, both titles being retained by home crews,
and the U14s fresh from their success the previous weekend
in the U14 County Championships at Hayle. Mounts Bay took
the Mixed title.
Rachel
Holder, Gig Club Secretary said “It’s been a fantastic
day’s racing. To see so many gigs lined up against the
backdrop of the cove we know so well is something special,
and we’re pleased to be able to share the day with fellow
rowers from far and wide. Many thanks to all who helped
make it happen”.
The day was filmed as part of a series to be aired on
BBC2 next year. A camera crew has been based in Cadgwith
all summer, following presenter Monty Halls as he tries
his hand at fishing, learning from the crabbers based
in the cove. Monty rowed with Cadgwith in the Mens B race,
and also ran a Crab Taste Test Challenge during the day
to raise awareness of sustainable fishing.
The celebrations kicked off with Cadgwith Singers, pasties
and a bar on Friday night, and ended with our customary
Buller Night party in the gig shed, the weekend raising
much needed funds which will allow us to put the finishing
touches to our new shed.

2009 Buller Day, 8th August 2009.
This year we had a great day . Falmouth had winning day but our U16s had a great win, well done to all! The sun was shining, the sea was calm and the racing was great! Didn't get many pics as I was on the BBQ all day, I have one or two which I'll send on when I get the camera going. Report by Katie
Top 3’s – Vets : Falmouth/Cadgwith/Helford. U16s : Cadgwith, Helford, Truro. MensA : Falmouth, Flushing & Mylor, Padstow – great close finish between these two crews. LadiesA : Falmouth, Newquay, Padstow. U14s : Cadgwith, Porthleven, Coverack. MensB : Falmouth, Lizard, Newquay. LadiesB : Helford, Mounts Bay, Newquay.
A special thank you to certain people...
Slim and Sarah Legge on the start boat, I'm sure all the Ladies A crews won't forget Sarah telling everyone that she will NOT be starting the race until Newquay gets back!
Gwen Jane for her commentry all day, excluding the vets race when she raced and was part of the 1st full ladies vets crew over the line!
All the umpires which come from other clubs to help us out - there are too many of you to name personally, but you know who you all are!
All club members who helped out during the day with car parking, organising the boats, selling food and drink, bar and BBQ cooking (a special mention to Josh and Alex who spent 4 hours non stop on the BBQ).
Hopefully everyone enjoyed the day and thank you to everyone who turned up, rowed and supported us.

Isles Buller Day 2005, Rain rain rain and great racing
Report and photos from Sat. 23rd July
There was a one minute silence to honour the memory of Benjamin Cochrane of the the Roseland Gig Club, who died last Saturday in a tragic boating accident. We pay our respects to him and family and friends.
Saturday morning looked promising, the sea was calm and there was very little rain to be seen. The gigs started arriving early (as usual Cadgwith weren't ready and chaos broke out with 1 trailer on the beach ready to go up and 3 in the road ready to come down). This was soon sorted after Mike and Michael made it to the car park.
22 boats in total came to the event from all over the county and beyond (Weymouth, and Appledore). Weymouth only just making it to the Men's A starting line.
Thanks to Paul Collins for his commentary throughout the day, Nicky Jose, Ian Cox, Andy Alden, Tatty and all the other umpires who stood the test of time out there in the pouring rain and worsening seas.

Some
results from Buller Day - will get more later, when I
get chance.

Sadly our own race day in the cove had to be cancelled this year owing to a blip of south easterly ‘slop’… literally just a few hours, but which would have made lining up 20 gigs below the cliffs abit too dodgy, and anyway it poured down all afternoon; not much fun for umpires and starters. What was gratifying was how many showed up for the evenings’ entertainment: all the gang from Newquay rowing club, Falmouth and even further afield.
Buller Day 2002
What an event! Nearly 20 boats turned up to this years event, the weather was perfect and the sea was flat, what more could you ask from an event? Possibly the home team to put out a mixed crew? Yes Cadgwith didn't quite make it to the start line up, the flag went down as we left the beach, oh well there's always the next time!
Thanks to your support”
Cadgwith Pilot Gig Club would like to thank all of you who help and support us, those who sponsor us, it really helps, the costs are high, maintaining the Gigs, the Clubhouse running costs, transport to the events, safety and clothing and a lot more.
