| Held
over the first bank holiday weekend in May,
the annual pilgrimage of gig rowers travelled
to the Isles of Scilly for the 15th World
Championship event. 2 of our own gigs, Buller
and Rose of Cadgwith joined another 91 gigs,
old and new with Bonnet being the oldest gig
taking part, built in 1830 (makes ours seem
really young!).

Cadgwith
took 6 racing crews this year, 2 womens,
2 mens and 2 vets. Luckily the weather was
nothing like last years, although the Friday
night racing saw choppy seas.
The
ladies vets race on Friday was from Nut
Rock to St Mary's harbour, our ladies getting
4th place behind Falmouth in Idas - 1st,
2nd was Penryn in Morlader and third was
Helford in Moroven. The "Fading Roses"
crew was:
Angela Peters (stroke)
Angie Richards
Chris Legge
Judith Preston
Claire Bates
Ann Muller (bow)
Katie Smith (cox)
Second race of the weekend was the mens
vets, their race was the long St Agnes to
St Mary's race, there were far more mens
vets than ladies vets so the competition
was on. Our men came a fantastic 3rd!! Falmouth
also won this in Idas, the Isles of Scilly
in new boat Emma Louise came second followed
closely by the Rose! Well done to the lads,
they were especially pleased about rowing
through Caradon - something you don't see
everyday especially when they are in their
brand new boat Millers Daughter! The crew
wanted to say thank you to Stevie Jane for
his coxing. The crew this year was:
Steve
Jane (cox)
Jeb Preston (stroke)
Dave Jane
Dave Henn (Chicka)
Diddy Holyer
Tony Halliday
Bruce Bray (Bow)
The weather perked up for the Saturday for
the massive line ups on the St Agnes start
lines. Up to 93 gigs all lined up ready
to go must be a nightmare to the organisers
but it a spectacular site for any rower,
spectator or anyone flying over on the helicopter
or planes. This race organises the crews
into league tables for the following 3 races.

First up was the ladies race. The crew in
Rose had a very good row, with good racing
between them, Jubilee and Sir Tristan, the
crew in Buller had an even better row with
very few spaces between them and Rose. This
placed Rose in Heat C and Buller in Heat D.
The second race on the Saturday was from Nut
Rock to St Mary's, a much shorter but more
intense race as there are only 12 gigs in
each heat with the top two boats being promoted
into the next heat and the last two being
demoted into the heat below. Rose won heat
C promoting her to heat B. Buller had a change
of crew for this race and sadly went down
to heat E, however Sunday was a new day.
The
two races on the Sunday are both from Nut
Rock with glorious sunshine, warm temperatures
and almost flat calm seas. Buller had a
great race and stayed in Heat E, the crew
in Rose were pushed very hard to stay in
Heat B but unfortunately got demoted back
to group C for the final set of racing of
the weekend.
This
was probably the best race of the weekend
for Buller, she came second in her heat
just missing out on a podium finish - next
year girls!!! They finished 50th overall.
Rose had a harder race in Heat C but managed
30th overall. Not bad seeing as all the
boats that beat Rose are younger than her.
The
mens racing was very exciting. The Rose
had a very stong crew as did the Buller.
The big St Agnes race was brilliant with
Rose getting into Heat A - the top heat.
Buller were't far behind either! Rose were
in the Heat with one of their main rivals
- the Lark of Coverack! The pressure was
on.
Judging
by the boats in the top group, Rose was
the defiante veteran of the group. With
new boats for top crews such as Caradon
the competition was tough. The second race
of Saturday saw both Rose and Lark drop
from the top group into Heat B. Buller however
was doing fine.
Sunday
saw the Rose crew go out full of determination
to get back into the top group for the final.
They had a brilliant race and got back to
heat A leaving Lark reeling in Heat B for
the final. Buller ended up in Heat C for the
final which was brilliant seeing as they were
the 3rd (or so) fastest B crew (Caradon B
was 3rd overall in the competition!).
The
final was very exciting to watch, Buller was
having a good fight with all the crews in
their heat finishig 39th overall. Rose had
a very tough competition with Caradon A, Caradon
B, Falmouth etc. They had a good fight with
Senara finishing 12th overall.
Overall it was a fantastic weekend for all
crews.
