Cadgwith Pilot Gig Club

Many thanks to Dylan for the Report:

This year world pilot gig championships had over 100 gigs competing in the mens, and just under 100 for the womens, still, a spectacular sight on both St. Agnes races. How ever, racing started on the Friday night when both womens and mens veterans (over 40's) took to the water to race from St. Agnes back to St. Mary's quay.

The mens veterans was overun by Roseland in their new gig, Polvarth, which had recently been lauched and the womens victors were the women from Falmouth. The mid pack racing was very close between a number of gigs until 2nd and 3rd places were distinct, final positionings were
Womens
1. Irene Too (Falmouth)]
2. Merthen (Helford)
3. Melusine (Zennor)

Mens
1. Polvarth (Roseland)
2. Irene Too (Falmouth)
3. Tregarthens (Isles Of Scilly)

Then, the two big races let of, both from St. Agnes in mens and womens. This years St. Agnes race caused a bit of an uproar in the Pundits books, as the favourites won neither of their respective races. Falmouth didn't win the womens and Caradon didn't win the mens, instead each race was taken by Caradon for the women and Par Bay for the men. All the crews were pushed hard in the St. Agnes race for their places, even the top three pushed each other to shuffle around positions at least twice during the whole race. The final positions of the St Agnes Race:
Womens
1. Millers Daughter (Caradon)
2. Irene Too (Falmouth)
3. Polvarth (Roseland)
Mens
1. Phantom (Par Bay)
2. Polvarth (Roseland)
3. Millers Daughter (Caradon)

Close racing in the groups were to follow on both days. The top two who finished in each group went up to the next, and the bottom two went down into the group below. Then, the finals began. The womens races came first, spectator boats watched from distance to avoid wash. Then, when the flag drops, thats it, everything into every stroke. The Results for each group are as follows:
Ladies:
Group B Tregarthens
Groups C Phantom
Group D Volante
Group E Circe
Group F Peveril
Group G Helford
Group H Averack

And the Mens:
Group B Emperor
Group C Sir Tristan
Group D Mary Newman
Group E Volante
Group F Helford
Group G Royal
Group H Roscarrock
Group I Rival

The Finals then were very close. The womens was eventually won by favourites Falmouth who were very hard pushed by roseland for the top spot, for the number 1 title. Then it was the mens turn to battle it out for the top spot. It was always going to be a two horse race for the top spot, it was between Roseland and Caradon in Polvarth and Miller's Daughter. They pushed each other to the max, each taking it in turn to take top sport in the race. Roseland took a lengths lead after one of the Miller's Daughters rowers caught a crab and aloud Polvarth to go up but after they but one big huge ten into the race, pushed their body's to the max and close the gap. They eventually rowed till they were level until both crews made one last final push for the line. From the spectator boats, no-body knew who had one, neither crew put their oars up in the air to celbrate, there was an agonising wait until, using a official photo it was declared that Caradon, for the 15th time, had won the Mens world pilot gig Championships.

Cheers

Katie

Held over the first bank holiday weekend in May, the annual pilgrimage of gig rowers to the Isles of Scilly for the 16th World Championship event.

2 of our own gigs, Buller and Rose of Cadgwith joined another 98 or so gigs (ours, now one of the heaviest!).
