Cadgwith Pilot Gig Club

Our four Cadgwith gigs: Tamarisk

See 7 photos below of the latest of Cadgwith's gigs named "Tamarisk".

Valentines Day saw the launch of the new Cadgwith gig, “Tamarisk”. Tamarisk is the fourth gig to be added to the Cadgwith fleet and the first gig in 15 years for the club.

Cadgwith Gig Club have had to raise £18,500 in order to pay for the gig, £10,000 of this was awarded through the Awards for All lottery grant, the rest raised through a number of very generous donations and fundraising efforts from the club. The club are still raising money to finish building their new gig shed which is to house some of the clubs boats as the current shed is not big enough. This will also give club members more space to work on the gigs during the winter months.

Sam Jane, Club Secretary gave a moving speech to thank everybody for their generosity in helping the club to raise the money, not just for the new gig, but for the whole project. There were too many people to name personally but particular thanks were given to Maurice and Louis Hunkin of Fowey who spent three months building Tamarisk to a very high standard. Local retired fisherman, Sharkey Stephens who is always asking club members how the club is doing at event, officially named the gig Tamarisk by pouring champagne over her bow and Rev Bill Cole blessed her.

As Cadgwith’s Under 14’s Crew is currently the County Champions, it seemed only fair that the junior members of the club be the fist to row in her as they are the ones who the club hope are going to continue going from strength to strength in a new lighter racing gig. They were quickly followed by the men (the ladies are yet to test her out!).

Below older news about Tamarisk:

Tamarisk is our new boat We have decided that we'll have a naming ceremony on Saturday 14th February at 2pm.

As its February it will probably be unsuitable to launch her so its been suggested that we have a launch day in May once she comes back from the Scillies. We could have a bbq, bar and evening entertainment and give members of the club an opportunity to row in her.

Maurice Hunkin of Fowey began work on her in September (2008) and as I write this he has nearly finished painting her in the familiar Cadgwith colours. The only change to the colour scheme this time will see the inside of the boat varnished.

Members of the club have been to visit Maurice and all have been really impressed with what they saw. In December came the hard task of naming the newest addition to our Club. Members were asked to suggest names and the final decision was made by the committee.

It was unanimously decided to name the new gig “Tamarisk”. For those of you not familiar with the name, Tamarisk is the feathery, evergreen shrub that grows abundantly around the cove. Look towards the Huers hut and it can be spotted! We hope everyone likes the name; so far the general response has been very positive.
